Medieval Times in Early Modern Texts

that will take place on 3–5 December 2025 in Bratislava, Slovakia.

Probably all of us researching the early modern period have, with or without knowing it, come across early modern texts that in one way or another are connected with the Middle Ages. Such texts may either provide different representations of that period between late antiquity and the Renaissance, or they may contain medieval elements such as linguistic traits, literary forms, etc. The aim of this conference is on the one hand to explore the medieval aspects of early modern texts, both Latin and vernacular, and on the other to shed light on the many representations of the Middle Ages found in texts of the early modern period.

Topics of interest include but are not limited to:

  • early modern interpretations of medieval phenomena
  • early modern narratives of the Middle Ages in historiography, political treatises, drama, panegyrical prose, and other literary genres
  • medieval arguments in early modern confessional strife
  • medieval foundations of early modern identities
  • medieval elements in early modern scientific discourse
  • the afterlife of medieval texts in early modern times
  • medieval linguistic elements in early modern texts

To apply, please send an abstract of circa 200 words and a short CV to Svorad Zavarský (svoradzavarsky@gmail.com) by 30 June 2025.
