Description of project

The objective of the project is to present current research results on significant Czech-Slovak-Hungarian historical phenomena from a transnational perspective. It brings together three leading institutions through workshops, seminars, a scholarly journal, and podcasts, engaging experts and the public to foster dialogue, cooperation, and mutual understanding.

The historical legacy of the Central European countries of the former Habsburg Monarchy—namely the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary—still shapes contemporary society. It is evident in national narratives, family memories, and in mutual relations. A deeper scholarly understanding of history, together with open discourse from diverse perspectives, can counter present-day polarisation and radicalisation, while fostering comprehension, tolerance, and cooperation. The project aims to establish a platform for presenting research on Czech-Slovak-Hungarian history, focusing on political, economic, social, and cultural ties across shifting state entities. It examines both the benefits and limits of cooperation and the causes and consequences of conflicts, placing them in context. An interdisciplinary approach is intended to stimulate new avenues of inquiry and highlight innovative research themes. Equally, the project encourages society-wide discussion of these historical dynamics without advancing a political agenda. To achieve this, it will implement educational activities including scholarly workshops, seminars for students and teachers, and online podcasts. The project also seeks to strengthen relations among the three countries by prioritising dialogue in their shared historical space. In particular, it emphasises cultivating relations between Slovakia and the Czech Republic, as well as between Slovakia and Hungary. Divergent perspectives should be addressed through expert discourse to promote balanced and harmonious cooperation.
