Visiting Fellowship Call 2024 / IH SAS

The Institute of History at the Slovak Academy of Sciences is pleased to offer fellowships for scholars from outside Slovakia, lasting from one to three months inside the time frame between January and June 2025. We welcome applications from scholars of all ages engaged in cutting-edge historical or interdisciplinary research. This fellowship provides a unique opportunity to collaborate with a leading institution in historical research in Slovakia, and connect with the Institute’s experts in various fields—ranging from political to social, cultural, and economic history, as well as related disciplines and digital humanities. There are no limitations as to historical period or geographical area, but preference will be given to certain themes (see below). We particularly encourage applications from those with a strong interest in Central and Eastern Europe.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must have completed a PhD or equivalent by the application deadline and must not be citizens of Slovakia.
  • Preference will be given to projects related to the themes outlined in the strategic research plan of the IH SAS, including:
    • Construction of identities and transfer of ideas in medieval Central Europe
    • Medievalism and modernism in the Early Modern Period
    • Social exclusion/inclusion and social cohesion
    • Collective frustrations, phobias, hatred, and violence in interwar and wartime society
    • Reconstruction of country and society after military conflict
    • The legacy of the welfare state and post-war modernism
    • Economic and environmental history during the 20th century

Application Deadline:

  • 31 October 2024

What to Submit:

  • A project proposal (up to 1000 words)
  • A CV including a list of the applicant’s most important scholarly publications

The Institute is Offering:

  • Travel expenses for a round trip from your home institution (max 500 euros)
  • Free accommodation in an apartment in Bratislava (near the National Archives and University Library)
  • A working space at the Institute
  • Access to the Central Library of SAS and the independent state “University Library,” which have one of the finest collections of works on history in Slovakia
  • A friendly working environment and the opportunity to participate in the work of the Institute, fostering long-term individual and institutional cooperation

Please note, the Institute does not offer any additional financial assistance, however the fellowship can be combined with other forms of funding.
